The Truth About Breast Cancer:
It’s Not Destiny, It’s Chemistry

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. Each year, about 2.3 million women are diagnosed, and in the UK 1 in 7 women will face it in their lifetime¹. Behind these numbers are real people – mothers, daughters, sisters, friends; each navigating fear, hope and resilience in their own way.

Conventional medicine often frames breast cancer as the product of genes and bad luck. But the truth runs deeper. While genetics can influence susceptibility, having certain gene markers does not guarantee disease. Many people with inherited mutations remain completely healthy. This is because genes don’t determine destiny - the quality of the body’s internal environment does.

When the body becomes overly acidic, inflamed or congested with toxins, cells become stressed and prone to dysfunction. This internal environment creates the conditions where cancer develops - from inflammation to cellular mutation. But the moment we create the conditions for healing, the body begins to repair itself.

How Modern Medicine Views Breast Cancer

Modern medicine describes breast cancer as a disease of cell mutation, where normal breast cells begin to grow uncontrollably and form tumours. It attributes these changes to a mix of genetic predisposition, hormonal influences and random cellular errors².

Only around 5–10% of breast cancer cases are linked to inherited gene mutations

These gene mutations include BRCA1 and BRCA2, which normally help repair DNA and regulate cell growth³. The remaining 90–95% however, are considered “sporadic,” developing without a clear genetic cause - influenced instead by hormonal, environmental and lifestyle factors⁴.

Research shows that long-term oestrogen exposure, obesity after menopause, alcohol, smoking and inactivity can all raise the risk of breast cancer⁵. Yet these are often treated as risk factors rather than root causes. As a result, most attention in conventional care remains focused on detection and treatment - mammograms, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapy, rather than on prevention or the correction of internal imbalance⁶.

While these treatments can save lives and control tumours, they rarely address the internal environment that allowed the disease to manifest. The conventional model views cancer as something to be removed, while a holistic perspective sees it as a biological warning - a sign that the body’s systems of detoxification, immune repair and hormonal balance have been pushed beyond capacity. While modern medicine tries to treat the symptoms of breast cancer, holistic medicine seeks to restore the system.

Why the Breast Area Becomes Vulnerable

The breast area is particularly sensitive because of its unique anatomy and chemistry- a mix of hormone-sensitive glands, fat-rich tissue and a dense lymphatic network, making it especially reactive to internal and external toxins. It consists of:

  • Fatty tissue stores toxins: The breast is made of fatty tissue, which acts as a storage site for chemical residues — plastics, pesticides, and heavy metals that accumulate over decades7.
  • Hormonal sensitivity: Breast cells are highly responsive to oestrogen and progesterone. Anything that increases or mimics these hormones (like HRT, contraceptives, parabens, and phthalates) overstimulates cell growth8.
  • Lymphatic congestion: The armpits and chest are rich in lymph nodes — detox hubs where waste is filtered. Poor circulation, dehydration or toxicity can cause stagnation here, turning the breast into a site of build-up⁹.

The Epigenetic Effect : Genes Don't Decide- You Do.

Epigenetics bridges the gap between what we inherit and how we live. It’s the science showing that diet, stress, sleep and toxin exposure can literally change how our genes behave¹⁰ and in turn either prevent or promote breast cancer.

Every cell in the body carries the same DNA, yet not every cell acts the same. What makes the difference is which genes are turned “on” and which are kept “silent.” Epigenetic markers - tiny chemical tags added to DNA - control this process, and those markers are shaped by your inner and outer environment¹¹.

  • Diet: Whole foods, antioxidants, and herbal nutrients activate protective genes and suppress inflammatory ones12.
  • Toxins: Chemicals like BPA, parabens, and pesticides overstimulate oestrogen-related genes, affecting breast tissue health13.
  • Stress: Chronic cortisol exposure silences repair genes and fuels inflammation14.
  • Sleep: Deep rest triggers melatonin and DNA-repair pathways15.
  • Movement: Regular exercise promotes detoxification and immune resilience at the genetic level16.

Epigenetics confirms what holistic traditions have long taught - that the body’s internal environment shapes its expression of health or disease. In truth, disease is not written in our genes but in the chemistry we maintain. An acidic, inflamed and stressed internal environment becomes the decisive factor in whether health or illness expresses itself, including in breast cancer.

Silent Poisons in Plain Sight:
Everyday Triggers of Breast Cancer

While genes may set the blueprint, it’s the exposures, stresses and habits of everyday life that determine how that blueprint unfolds. These factors shape the internal chemistry that influences whether health or disease takes root.

Many of these risks are overlooked- or worse, normalised through products and prescriptions promoted by the same medical and commercial systems claiming to protect women’s health. From hormone therapies to household chemicals, the modern environment is saturated with substances that quietly alter the body’s chemistry, disrupt hormones and strain detoxification pathways. Below are some of the most common and preventable contributors to breast cancer today.

Hormone-Related Medications:
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Especially combined oestrogen-progestin therapy is linked to higher risk with long-term use17.
  • Oral contraceptives (“the Pill”): Slightly raise breast cancer risk while in use18.
  • Fertility drugs: Long-term stimulation of ovulation may increase risk for some women19.
Medical & Environmental Exposures:
  • Radiation: Repeated CT scans, X-rays or environmental exposure, damage DNA20.
  • Endocrine disruptors: BPA (plastics), parabens (cosmetics), phthalates (fragrances), PFAS (non-stick cookware), pesticides (glyphosate) disrupt the endocrine system21.
  • Vaccination adjuvants (e.g., aluminium salts): Some holistic critics highlight immune stress22.
Lifestyle Factors:
  • Alcohol: Even one drink per day raises risk by about 7–10%23.
  • Obesity after menopause: Fat tissue produces oestrogen, feeding hormone-sensitive cancers24.
  • Processed foods & sugar: Drive chronic inflammation and insulin resistance25.
  • Smoking: Adds carcinogens and weakens DNA repair26.
  • Vitamin D deficiency: Linked to higher risk and worse outcomes27.
Psychosocial Stressors:
  • Chronic stress: Disrupts hormones, weakens immunity and raises inflammation28.
  • Sleep disruption: Melatonin (the “repair hormone”) is suppressed by poor sleep29.
  • Structural inequality: Black women often face more aggressive forms and higher mortality, worsened by environmental exposures and inequities in care30.

The Cost of the Cure

While medical imaging, radiation and pharmaceuticals are widely relied upon in modern breast cancer care, they each carry their own risks - sometimes contributing to the very cellular damage they aim to prevent or heal.

1. Medical Imaging and Ionizing Radiation

Routine mammography remains the most commonly used method for early detection. But mammograms use low-dose ionizing radiation which has been shown to cause DNA mutations with repeated exposure over time. Repeated annual screenings can accumulate enough radiation to increase breast cancer risk particularly in women with BRCA mutations or existing DNA-repair deficiencies.31

2. Therapeutic Radiation

After surgery, radiation therapy is often used to eliminate residual cancer cells. But radiation doesn’t stop at the tumor; surrounding healthy tissue absorbs the blast. Over time, this can cause fibrosis, cellular mutation and in some cases secondary cancers in the treated area.32

3. Pharmaceutical Exposure and Hormonal Disruption

In breast cancer treatment, hormone-targeting drugs are commonly used to block or suppress estrogen since many breast cancers are hormone-sensitive. However, long-term use of therapies such as tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors can lead to other health risks including uterine cancer, blood clots, bone loss and metabolic disturbances.33 These medications aim to suppress hormonal stimulation of cancer cells yet they also alter the body’s natural endocrine balance introducing new vulnerabilities over time.

4. Chemotherapy and Cellular Damage

Chemotherapy’s aim is to destroy rapidly dividing cells yet in doing so it can also induce oxidative stress, damage DNA and weaken the body’s immune and detox systems leaving patients vulnerable to secondary malignancies or long-term cellular instability.34

Modern oncology has advanced in accuracy and reach but its tools often come with a cost. The aggressive nature of conventional treatments can compromise healthy cells, disrupt biological balance and leave lasting effects on the body’s ability to repair itself. This highlights the growing importance of holistic and integrative approaches - methods that focus on strengthening the body’s natural defences, supporting cellular repair and promoting healing without adding further harm.

Addressing Breast Cancer Holistically

Breast cancer is not random - it’s the body's natural response to accumulated and prolonged toxicity, acidity and inflammation.

From a holistic perspective, the goal isn’t merely to eliminate diseased cells but to restore the body’s terrain so that such conditions can no longer thrive.

Holistic care focuses on:

Fasting

Periodic fasting gives the body time to cleanse, rebalance hormones and regenerate. During fasting, the process of autophagy is activated - a natural mechanism where the body breaks down and recycles damaged or abnormal cells including those that may become cancerous.35

Fasting also lowers insulin and IGF-1 levels reducing the growth signals that encourage tumour development.36 Studies suggest that intermittent fasting can improve oestrogen metabolism and make the internal environment less hospitable to cancer cell survival.37

Alkaline Nourishment

Starchless fruits, vegetables and mineral-rich plants help restore the body’s natural pH balance. An alkaline internal environment supports oxygenation, cellular repair and immune strength while an acidic state encourages inflammation and stagnation where cancer cells are more likely to thrive.38

By choosing foods that cool and cleanse rather than clog and inflame we return the body to a chemistry where healing becomes possible.

Herbal Detox Support

Electrical herbs like sea moss, sarsaparilla and burdock root cleanse the blood, supply vital minerals and support the liver and lymph. They help neutralise acidity and flush out waste that burdens the immune system.

Other alkaline herbs such as hydrangea root help dissolve cysts, crystals and inflammation and have also been linked to inhibiting cancer tumour growth.39 Hydrangea’s natural compounds are thought to soften hardened tissue and clear calcifications.40

Hormone Balance

Herbs like raspberry leaf, valerian root and damiana help regulate and stabilise hormonal activity. Raspberry leaf supports oestrogen balance, valerian root helps modulate hormonal signalling through the endocrine system and may ease tension within glandular tissue whilst damiana helps ease stress-related fluctuations.41 These herbs reduce symptoms linked to hormonal imbalance which influence breast health over time.

Movement and Lymph Flow

Gentle activity such as yoga, walking and breathwork stimulates circulation and supports lymphatic drainage - essential for clearing toxins. The lymphatic system has no pump of its own and relies on movement and deep breathing to flow freely.42

Without it, stagnation can occur in the chest and underarm area creating the perfect environment for inflammation and toxicity to build. Regular movement helps oxygenate the body, strengthen immunity and reduce the internal congestion that often precedes disease.

Rest and Calm

Deep sleep and emotional stillness activate the body’s repair cycles. During rest, cortisol levels drop and melatonin - a powerful antioxidant linked to reduced breast cancer risk - increases.43 Chronic stress and sleep deprivation on the other hand raise inflammation and disrupt oestrogen balance. Rest allows the body to reset its chemistry, strengthen immunity and maintain hormonal harmony.

A growing movement of survivors is proving that recovery isn’t always found in a syringe or a scan - sometimes it begins with realignment. Surveys show that up to 80% of breast cancer survivors use some form of complementary or alternative therapy whether it’s acupuncture, herbal medicine or nutrition-based healing.44

Preventing or healing breast cancer begins with supporting - not suppressing, the body’s natural intelligence. When we nourish and cleanse our bodies, it remembers how to repair itself.

The Pink Ribbon Paradox

The pink ribbon is one of the most recognisable symbols of breast cancer awareness. What once started as a grassroots effort has now turned into a billion-dollar industry that often benefits more from disease management than prevention.

The global breast cancer market - from pharmaceuticals to fundraising - is now worth over $20 billion annually. Yet prevention research accounts for less than 5% of that funding. The vast majority supports screening, drugs and chemotherapy - profitable, ongoing treatments rather than root-cause solutions⁴⁵.

Major charities such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation raise hundreds of millions annually⁴⁶. Yet investigations have shown that much of this funding supports administrative costs, salaries and corporate partnerships - many with companies producing processed foods, beauty products or pharmaceuticals linked to hormone disruption⁴⁷. This contradiction has been called “pinkwashing” - the commercial exploitation of women’s suffering under the guise of solidarity.

Critics, including Dr Otis Brawley, former Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society, have spoken out about overdiagnosis, overtreatment and conflicts of interest between health organisations and corporate sponsors⁴⁸. He warned that the system rewards continuous treatment rather than prevention.

Awareness campaigns have become so commercialised that they risk silencing deeper conversations about prevention, toxicity and lifestyle - the very factors that could prevent breast cancer from developing in the first place.

Returning to the Root

The body doesn’t betray us, it mirrors us. Breast cancer is not an act of fate but a reflection of imbalance – chemical, emotional and environmental. Healing begins where honesty does: in acknowledging the role that diet, lifestyle and disconnection from nature play in shaping disease.

Countless women have overcome breast cancer through holistic means alone, guided by plant medicine, detoxification, deep nutrition and spiritual realignment⁴⁹⁻⁵². Their recoveries challenge the conventional narrative and reveal that healing is not limited to chemotherapy or radiation. Emerging research is beginning to echo what these survivors already embody: natural herbs show anti-tumour properties while integrative practices help restore balance, reduce inflammation and calm the nervous system. Yet...

The same systems that are meant to protect women are often the ones failing them – prioritising pills and poison over prevention and profit over principle.

Too often, women are told to fight their bodies instead of listening to them. And this isn’t an abstract issue...it’s personal. It’s about someone you’ve heard of, someone you love or someday, any one of us.

The data may still be catching up, but experience has long shown what many already know – that nature, holistic practices and the power of consciousness are the true medicine. The future of breast cancer prevention lies not in ribbons, donations or buying pink, but in understanding what’s poisoning us in the first place and reclaiming autonomy over our health.
